Biographical Sketch Dwight A. Nixon has served the Suffolk community for 23 years as the senior pastor of St. Mary’s Church of God in Christ. Dwight, his wife Brenda and two sons, Owen and Quincy, have resided in Suffolk for the past 10 years. They currently live in the Nansemond borough. Born in Norfolk, Virginia, Dwight demonstrated leadership abilities and a strong desire for excellence early in life. Dwight became the Tidewater Boxing Association Lightweight champion in 1975. The training and discipline gained through this boxing experience, followed by his call to a ministry of serving people, established the framework for Dwight’s drive to succeed and to help build strong families and communities. To further develop his creative and educational growth, Dwight earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Biblical Studies and the Master’s of Divinity degree from Norfolk Seminary and College, Norfolk, VA. Further studies include a certificate of completion in Pastoral Studies from C. H. Mason Bible College, Atlanta, Georgia. Dwight has a strong determination to uplift and build the community. He is committed to increasing economic success, supporting the education of our youth, promoting morale and maintaining safety for all citizens in the city of Suffolk. Having a passion for early childhood education, Pastor Nixon founded Kiddie Kingdom Child Care Center in 1998. This center is a great asset to the community and provides a structured program using the A Beka curriculum for ages two and a half to twelve. Dwight has served on numerous boards and organizations. He is serving his second term on the Suffolk Economic Development Authority (EDA). He is an Executive Board member of the International Longshoremen Association, Local 1248. He also serves as a Board Member for the Local 1248 Holding Corporation and as the Local 1248 Chaplain. He is a former member of the Joint Industrial Development Authority (IDA)/ Suffolk Airport Commission Expansion Project. Dwight is an Executive Board Member of the New Frontier Church of God in Christ and is an active member of the Nansemond Parkway Civic League. Other career highlights: He is a past director of Prepaid Legal Services. He was a volunteer member of Habitat for Humanity 2008, Huntersville Neighborhood 16-Home Blitz. With his experience, visionary leadership and strong commitment to his family, community and city, Dwight Nixon is ready to lead Suffolk to its brightest future.
