Editorial Summary
(from candidate's website) Dear Virginia Beach voter: You ask, “Who is John Moss that wants to be your Mayor?” I am a husband to my better half for over twenty-seven years. Kathy and I dated through high school, college, and graduate school. Kathy and I grew up at the Beach graduating from Princess Anne High School and attended Virginia colleges, Old Dominion and VA TECH respectively. I am a dad and coach to three great kids. My oldest John Robert, an Eagle Scout and a William and Mary alumni, is married and working on his doctorate degree. Thomas is closing in on being an Eagle Scout and will start his senior year at Princess Anne High School this fall. Katie is a very busy Girl Scout in middle school at Independence. I am very active in Scouting, because investing in our youth is the best bet to make tomorrow better than today. I spend a week each year of my vacation at summer Boy Scout camp. This summer, I am taking a crew of Scouts on a 141-mile canoe trip at the Northern Tier Scout Ranch. I am the son of a Navy family that lived the value of the importance of service to others before self. I am also a son like many others experiencing a parent having to sell their home in part due to rising taxes and moving to a less expensive community. I am lucky that my Mom remains relatively close and we can visit each other often. As the co-founder and chairman of the Virginia Beach Taxpayer Alliance, I have joined with families across our fine city to advocate for tax relief and shift of priorities to families and neighborhoods over tourists. I played a key role in protecting your home from possible condemnation by defeating the creation of a redevelopment housing authority. VBTA’s activism is why we have a tax rate of 89 cents today, and that is still too high. I served on City Council from 1986 to 1990 and 1992 to 1995 as a fiscal conservative. I am a 29-year public servant serving in the Navy Department. I have had the honor and privilege of working for you in helping to keep the Navy the best led, trained, and equipped in the world. I had the rare privilege as a civilian to graduate from the senior officer graduate school at the Naval War College. I have served as deputy to flag officers on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations. I love working for the Navy because the Navy’s values are my values, as they are the values of our nation’s beginning. I am the candidate who wants to be your Mayor, because I want to lead by serving first, listening first, and collaborating on shared values first before acting. Virginia Beach is the place we all call home. Together we can refocus Virginia Beach to make it a better home for everyone. On Tuesday, November 4, 2008, vote John Moss for Mayor - invest in your liberty, limited government and personal prosperity.
